Fantasia (3’40”)
For Solo Alto Sax in Eb
Fantasia for Solo Alto Sax in Eb is a short work based on an original theme and drawing influence from Rózsa’s Sonatina for clarinet, Bach’s cello suites, and the musical modes. The opening theme is somewhat sad and wistful, making use of various scales or modes to color its ‘micro-sections’. These micro-sections provide the musical content for the rest of the piece, where each larger section uses a motif (musical idea) from the main theme as its basis. All the while, the intensity slowly builds as the note values become quicker and the articulations and dynamics become more marked. This culminates in the fast middle section which slows into a lyrical section of melancholic longing. After a very brief cadenza to reestablish the original key, the main theme returns in full, though slightly softer and all the more distant in light of the musical journey we have taken.
