New Eden is a 20-minute work inspired by Christopher Tin's The Lost Birds. After hearing VOCES8's recording of Tin's work, I was inspired to make a large-scale work for choir and orchestra that was focused on the beauty of nature. I reached out to a Catholic friend (Luke Desclefs) of mine to see if he had any poems with this theme. He shared his poem, New Eden, with me and I soon got to work on setting it to music. After a little over a year of work, here it is!
Each movement of New Eden has a distinct mood reflecting the stanza(s) of text it sets. The piece begins with blossoming strings and vocals, travels through joys and sorrows, and ends with a heart-tugging diminuendo as the last words of the poem repeat, leaving the listener with hope, sorrow, and finality.
